The Evolution of Anti-Mormonism

Crossing the Atlantic Ocean

Accusation #3: The fourth accusation against Joseph Smith is that it was impossible that, in ancient times, for anybody in the Middle East part of the world to circumvent the oceans and come to the Americas.

Response #3: Several bits of evidence and facts that there was the possibility of crossing the oceans several thousand years ago. National Geographic did a great story about the ancient Egyptian reed boat that actually crossed the ocean by current. This expedition made it all the way to America. So crossing the ocean in approximately 2,000 BC and 600 BC are totally possible. This story was in the National Geographic magazine and on a TV special.

Another bit of evidence is marijuana. Did you hear that they have discovered traces of marijuana in the hair of some ancient Middle East mummies? Marijuana was specific to the Americas until the Spaniards discovered it! How did marijuana get to the ancient Middle East area? It shows that not only they could travel from the Middle East to the Americas but also somehow they returned back to the Middle East with the marijuana!

What was the response of the anti-Mormons?

  • They chose to ignore those facts and they moved on to the next accusation!
